Volkswagen's conjecture of "battery day"

Time:2021-03-11
Volkswagen plans to double the total sales of battery driven vehicles by 2021 to 6-8% and close the gap with Tesla's electric vehicle sales.

According to foreign media reports, Volkswagen Group plans to hold an event (power day) on March 15, similar to Tesla's "battery day", to release the latest progress in battery.

According to the market forecast, Volkswagen's "Sany project" (currently mainly used to show super fast charging technology), aero-b plan and battery cooperation project with Swedish start-up northvolt will all appear in this event.

Earlier this week, Volkswagen announced that it would speed up the transformation of electric vehicles again. It plans to sell more than 70% of new cars in Europe and more than 50% in China and the United States by 2030.

At the same time, Volkswagen plans to double the proportion of battery driven vehicles in its total sales to 6% to 8% by 2021, and narrow the gap with Tesla's electric vehicle sales.

In order to promote the development of electrification, improve the level of battery technology and ensure adequate battery supply, it is very important for the public.

At present, the MEB platform technology is still adopted by the public. For the next generation battery integration technology, two directions will be considered: CTP and CTC.

Recently, Volkswagen has released relevant documents on the next generation battery system technology, showing the latest trend of the technology. Some information is revealed: first, the iteration speed is faster than expected; second, it is compatible with different types of cells; third, the cost is reduced.

According to the judgment of the industry, Volkswagen CTP may be developed based on the size envelope of the existing MEB, that is, redesign the interior of the battery pack, similar to the model 3 module solution of Ningde era.

From the perspective of iteration speed, Tesla leads the industry in battery integration technology for about three years, while mass production of large module technology appears in China in 2019. With the help of China's R & D advantages, the public can develop the next generation battery platform technology, which will shorten the time of 2-3 years.

According to the judgment of the industry, the development of MEB platform technology is mainly the joint achievement of Volkswagen and LG Chemical, which is based on the development of soft package. In the next generation of technology, the joint development form of "Volkswagen + catl" will be formed, which is based on the development of square cell.

In the next generation solution, it is also an important consideration whether it can be compatible with different types of cells. Based on the standardization at the cell level, Volkswagen has achieved a lot of interface standardization in the whole integration. Standardization makes configuration models more expandable to meet different performance and endurance requirements of different models.
Although VW has achieved some success in technology, it is still a challenge to obtain sufficient battery supply in the face of rising battery demand.

Not long ago, Volkswagen's battery supplier ski in the United States lost a legal dispute with LG Chemical. Ski was prohibited from selling batteries, modules, battery packs and related parts in the United States in the next 10 years, which may weaken Volkswagen's battery supply.

However, Volkswagen is also constantly looking for partners to promote the production and development of batteries. At present, it has cooperated with Sweden's northvolt to produce batteries in Europe, accelerated the integration with GuoXuan hi tech and made new breakthroughs in LFP technology. It is also an early supporter of quantumscape, a listed solid-state battery company.

In addition, while announcing battery day, CEO Herbert diess confirmed plans to build batteries in Spain as part of the renovation of his matore plant.
